With the difference of the telegraphic analogical telephones (STN) distributed by the telephone exchanges, VoIP makes it possible to extend telephony on any numerical or analogical network accepting protocol TCP/IP (Ethernet, ISDN, PPP, etc.) Operation of VoIP: At the time of the emission, a program called codec digitizes and compresses an audio signal (the human voice for example), the numerical data thus obtained are conveyed to the recipient in packages TCP/IP. The codec of the receiving program carries out the operations opposite (decompression, then analogical restitution of the audio signal). Telephony on IP uses the VoIP technique and owes its growing success with the reduced costs of the transport of information via Internet network. Several actors of data processing launched out in this extremely competing market with regard to the large operators of traditional telephony; most known is the Luxembourg company Skype Technologies SA, of which the commercial offer SkypeOut (footbridge SIP on the traditional telephone network) competition directly these operators.
