 Token Ring

Definition

Network with token, out of ring, developed by IBM in the Seventies and standardized under standard IEE 802.5.

Description

The network Token Ring is network in which before emitting on the network a computer must have a "token". The purpose of this logical token, taking the shape of a particular package circulating of computer out of computer, is to prevent that two computers emit simultaneously on the network and cause a collision. To allow the good circulation of the token, the network with schematically a form circular, known as out of ring, where the token circulates gradually. At the time of the operation of the network, a computer wishing to emit will receive the token of the close computer preceding it on the network, to transmit the desired data, then, at the end of its transmission (or when the time of emission being granted him is past), it will make pass the token to the computer succeeding to him on the ring. This type of network is predictive, it is has to say that one can calculate the maximum time which will put the token to make the turn of the ring, which made it very popular in the industrial field real time, for example for the piloting of robots. Its complexity and its cost made it marginal in the other fields or it was supplanted by the standard éthernet simpler and less expensive. The standard éthernet envisages speeds of 4 or 16 megabits a second, the standard High Speed Token Ring (HSTR) allows when it speeds of 100 Mb/s.
