Island of the Meeting
Definition
The island of the Meeting is a French Department of Overseas (974) since the year 1946.
Description
The Meeting is located in the South-west of the Indian Ocean, to 800 kms of Madagascar and with 220 kms of the Maurice island it is the largest island of the archipelago of Mascareignes. The island counts two great volcanic mountainous zones (the piton of Snows and that of the Furnace). the beauty of this island must also with its three circuses with the impressive relief (Cilaos, Mafate and Salazie). The high plains extend between these two mountainous zones (the plain of the Kaffirs, the plain of the Cabbage trees). the island known and is appreciated for its picturesque excursions. The island of the Meeting presents a particularly varied flora. More than 1 000 species of plants gradually settled, with the liking of the marine currents, the cyclones and the migrations. The Meeting is a tropical island whose mountainous character, (40 % of its surface) is above 1 000 meters of altitude, generates strong contrasts of temperature and pluviometry. One distinguishes two seasons, from May to October, the winter season which one calls the southern winter. one finds there temperatures between 18 °C and 25 °C on the coasts. The southern summer, from November to April, the temperatures often are included/understood between 25 °C and 32 °C on the coasts. The island is divided into three great climatic zones: the West coast, known as "under the wind" (dry and hot), the East coast, called "to the wind" (wind and abundant rains) and the tops of the island with fresher temperatures, and a less frequent sunning. The island of the Meeting holds records of precipitations. The importance of the cyclonic rains (November at April) makes it possible the Meeting to record a certain number of world records of precipitations: it falls on average more than 12 meters from water per annum in certain places Tops. Paradoxically, all the western part of the island cruelly misses water and the contrast of the vegetation is seizing! the population (800 000 inhabitants) of the Meeting is a great force for the island. From a history full with movements and meetings, was born a company from a great cultural richness. It is difficult to classify the population in sections and of categories. There is a mixture of colors of skin, cultures and traditions. Its inhabitants are called the Creoles
