Haiti
Definition
Haiti is a State, located in North America, in the western part of the island of Hispaniola, the other part being occupied by the Dominican Republic.
Description
Port-with-prince, 2 million inhabitants, is the capital. The country counts approximately 8 million inhabitants in 2005. Hispaniola has ete decouverte in 1492 per Christophe Colomb. It is the largest island of the Greater Antilles, in lës the Caribbean. Haiti is made up mainly of mountains escarpées with small coastal plains and valleys. The central part and the East are a large plate of altitude. The principal river is Artibonite. The climate is tropical. The rain season extends from April at June and October at November. The country regularly undergoes important precipitations and cyclones. Two thirds of the population live below the poverty line (less 1$/jour/personne) and 3% of the population hold 50% of the richness of the country, Haiti is the poorest Country of Americas. The population is the fruit of unions between various races: Spanish and French colonizers of 16th to the 18th century, a few hundreds of Caribbean Indians (of the extermination by the conquistadores at the time of discovered island) and especially African deportees of the coasts of Guinea since 1502, then of all the coasts of Africa. It is currently made up of a majority of blacks (95 %), of a minority of mulattos (5 %) and a few thousands of white. The Haitian population is young: half has less than 20 years. One raises a strong proportion of illiterates, concerning especially the rural populations and the women. A programme of elimination of illiteracy in Creole was launched in 1985 by the catholic church. The population is primarily rural.
