Definition

The folksonomies represent a means for the users of an application or a Web site to allot keywords which theirs are clean with given contents.

Description

Concretely, the principle of the folksonomies corresponds to a kind of collaboratif classification of the data of a site, with for objective facilitating the access to the contents since they are the users who characterize it. Currently, of good examples of use of the folksonomies are the sites flickr.com and del.icio.us. The term "Folksonomy", invented by Thomas Vander Wal, comes from "Folks" (people) and "Taxonomy" (rules of classification) and to some extent means "classification by people". One could translate it into French by "Personomie".
