 ATM

Definition

ATM is a protocol of transport containing packages which multiplexes as well data as of the voice and video.

Description

The means of transport ATM is at the same level as the mode of Ethernet transfer to the difference that the ATM is conceived to transport data as well (for example of the packages IP, Internet Protocol) that voice or video. Compared to the synchronous networks (like the telephone networks), network ATM uses, thanks to the multiplexing, the white of communication to transmit other useful data, thus guaranteeing a better use of the physical band-width. Network ATM uses packages of 53 bytes (5 bytes of heading and 48 bytes of data). The heading of 5 bytes includes/understands the destination of the package as well as identifiers making it possible to know inter alia the quality of service (QOS, Quality Of Service). Networks ATM are orchestrated by the switches ATM which receive, démultiplexent, direct and remultiplexent the packages towards following switch ATM, according to the destination of the cell present in the heading. The transfer of data by ATM is preceded by the establishment by a connection or virtual connection associated one indentifiant VCI (Virtual Channel Identifier) or VPI (Virtual Path Identifier). Technology ATM is used as well in local area network (LAN Local Access Network) as in network at long distance (WAN Wide Access Network). The authorized flows are theoretically infinite but are limited by the physical flow of optical fibres and the processing capability of the switches.
