Definition

Rene Descartes (1596-1650) is one of the modern founders of science and the thought

Description

He is a mathematician and physicist. The purpose of its philosophical work is to justify the revolution which is achieved at its time in sciences. In 1637, it publishes the Discourse on Method. This work is used as foreword with three scientific treaties: Optics, Geometry and Meteors. Descartes is the creator of the analytical geometry: it has the idea to represent curved and geometrical figures by algebraical expressions. It discovers the law of the refraction. The Discourse on Method criticizes science scholastic, inspired by Aristote, which is still taught time of Descartes. The method of new science must be founded on the use of mathematics. It criticizes also the skeptics, who doubt the possibility of an unquestionable science. The certainty is possible. There is at least an indubitable knowledge: that we exist
